When arranging fences around a house or a summer cottage, the question necessarily arises: how to make a gate with your own hands. The drawings, photo and video materials given in this article will help you understand the installation process of such structures, as well as determine the choice of the opening method. After a careful miscalculation of all the subtleties and nuances, you can choose the optimal structure suitable for a specific area and prepare everything you need in advance.

Swing gates

The simplest and most convenient option is considered to be a swing gate with a built-in wicket. A similar scheme is most often used when arranging fences for a private house due to the simplicity of the design and the possibility of DIY installation.

According to this scheme, the sash and the wicket are installed on conventional hinges welded to the supporting posts. They can be fastened in two ways: from the inside and outside of the supports. The door opening side depends on the mounting option and the type of hinges. Most often, the sashes are made in the form of metal frames made of shaped pipe or metal corner... Sheathing can be carried out from different finishing materials, these include:

  • wood;
  • sheets of thin metal;
  • corrugated board.

Forged sashes also look good, but it is best to entrust their creation to a master due to the complexity of such a process. Without special skills, it is impossible to assemble such a gate with your own hands. Drawings, photos and videos to facilitate self-assembly of other types of doors can be found below.

Installation of swing gates

If swing gates are planned to be made of a relatively light material - corrugated board, then metal pipes with a diameter of 80-100 mm are perfect as supporting pillars. A profiled square pipe is also suitable for this task.

The flaps themselves are made of pipes with a square cross section, but smaller. Recommended dimensions 40x25x3000 mm. The sash frame is made by welding in the form of ordinary frames and then reinforced with crossbars or diagonals from the same material. It is imperative to provide space on the doors for bolts, locks and opening-closing stops.

Installation of such structures begins with the installation of support pillars.The following describes how to assemble the gate supports with your own hands. Drawings, photos and videos will help you understand all the intricacies of the work.

Installation of support pillars: two ways

The installation of supports can be done in two ways: conventional hammering or concreting. In order to properly install a metal pipe in the ground, it is necessary to make a hole in advance and use a large sledgehammer to hammer in the support. The plugging level is approximately 120-130 cm.

This method is considered the simplest, it guarantees the speed of implementation and high reliability of the future design. After installation, the supports must be fixed to the fence posts or, if required, to the yard buildings. Next, awnings are welded onto which the pre-assembled sashes are subsequently suspended.

Concreting can be used as another method for installing supports. It can be made with or without reinforcement with metal reinforcement. For this, holes are prepared with a diameter of about 25-30 cm and a depth of 150-200 cm. These values may vary depending on the section of the support pillar. A so-called pillow is poured onto the bottom of the prepared pits - layers of sand and gravel, which are then compacted.

After that, the post is installed on the prepared pillow, if necessary, the reinforcement strapping is installed and the entire structure is poured with concrete. To do this, you can use cement brands M-200, 250. While the solution is fresh, the pillar is set at a level and fixed with additional supports. Support pillars made of brick look good. In this case, the hinge attachment points are built directly into the masonry.

Sliding gates

Of all the options for sliding gates, there are three most common. They are:

  • console;
  • retractable;
  • suspended.

Hanging gates are the least popular of these types. When installing them, the passage height is limited, since a metal profile is mounted on top, on which the sash is suspended.

In regions where winters are cold and snowy, you should not install a sliding gate option. For their full use, you will have to constantly clean them of ice and snow drifts, which is not always convenient. Otherwise, these designs are pretty good, they do not require a large area for full opening.

It is not difficult to make a sliding gate with your own hands. Drawings, photo and video materials will help you understand the features of the installation of such structures. For sliding gates you need to provide free space along the fence. The approximate dimensions of the sash are shown in the figure.

On the surface of the earth, a special rail or profile is equipped, along which the sash will move with the help of special rollers. In the upper part, roller elements and additional brackets are also installed, which will hold the canvas when moving.

Cantilever gates are considered to be more complex in design than their counterparts. But it is a special device that guarantees reliable operation even in the frosty season. The main advantages of this type of gate: no height limitation and the ability to install only one support post. They do not have contact with the ground rail, so their use in any weather does not present any particular problems.

Features of sash assembly and foundation preparation

The door leaf is mounted on a pre-prepared frame made of a metal pipe, profile or corner... A guide beam is welded to the bottom of the frame, inside which roller carriages are installed. It is along them that the base moves in both directions, carrying out the opening and closing of the structure.

Helpful advice! After welding the frame, the resulting seams must be cleaned with a grinder, and corrosion centers must be removed from the entire surface.

To find out the required size of such gate, you need to conditionally divide them into two parts: a closing opening and a counterweight. The length of the counterweight (console part) should be 35-50% of the required opening width. Under the cantilever part, a foundation arrangement is required in order to withstand the loads created by the gate when moving.

Helpful advice! The standard opening for easy entry through the gate should be 4 meters. Accordingly, the length of the console part will be about 2 meters.

For this it is necessary to prepare channel # 20, equal in length to the cantilever part of the gate. Then a foundation pit is dug out adjacent to the support pillar. Its dimensions should be slightly larger than the channel, and the depth should be below the level of soil freezing. It is also necessary to create at least two reinforcing cages to tie the channel to the foundation.

Channel 200 mm is placed close to the post. Channel of 160 mm is laid with an offset of 50 mm from the post. Pillar embeds are flush with brickwork (trim)

After pouring, the finished foundation takes about a month to finally withstand, but after a week it will gain maximum strength, after which you can start installing the sash.

Necessary fittings

The hardware for cantilever doors on the construction market is quite diverse. When choosing it, you need to take into account the width of the opening and the weight of the finished sash. The standard set includes:

  • 6 meter guide rail;
  • two roller bearings;
  • end rollers;
  • end roller catchers;
  • additional device with 2 rollers;
  • end caps.

Helpful advice! To ensure that the mechanisms do not cause problems, the rollers must be fixed in the same plane.

The kit usually contains assembly instructions, with its help you can assemble the entire gate structure with your own hands. Drawings, photos and videos collected in this article will help you to understand in detail all the nuances.
